The Discovery Centre — Halifax’s best family attraction has recently received a facelift and is ready once again for thousands of kids to poke, prod, and pinch (all in the name of science). The newly retrofitted spaced re-opened in 2017 much to the delight of Haligonians. This science-based interactive space has one rotating Featured Exhibit and four permanent exhibits on energy, health, flight and Just For Kids! An extra $2 gets you into the fully immersive Dome Theatre. Here you can explore live star shows, search the deep corners of space and experience a meteor shower!

Museum of Natural History — Looking to take your kids on a walk down Nova Scotia’s history? Stepping into the Museum of Natural History will show you a working bee colony, a 94-year-old tortoise and Mi’kmaq artifacts. The museum focuses the deep history of Nova Scotia and Maritime region and is a great way to teach the family about the place we call home. There are daily events at the museum, which includes ‘The Importance of Being Bees’, ‘Close Encounters of the Tidal Kind’, and of course, the ‘Gus Walk’, when the resident gopher tortoise, Gus, wanders the museum.

Maritime Museum Of The Atlantic — Located on the waterfront, the Maritime Museum Of The Atlantic pays tribute to the storied history of Halifax’s ties to the ocean. Within its hallways and chambers, you’ll find exhibits showcasing Halifax’s role in the Royal Canadian and Merchant navies and how the city played an integral role during World War II and the Battle of The Atlantic. The museum also features detailed exhibits on the sinking of the Titanic and the Halifax Explosion.

Cole Harbour Heritage Farm — If the family is looking to explore Halifax’s agricultural past, add Cole Harbour Heritage Farm to your list. Based out of Giles House, the oldest building in Cole Harbour, the farm boasts barns, outbuildings, and dozens of sheep, pigs, goats, cows, and poultry. The museum features a tea room that blends influences from England, Canada, and Cole Harbour to serve lunch and dinner, as well as traditional afternoon tea. With the farm’s main goal of preserving life and traditions from the 1800’s, stepping this lush oasis of history may be the family-friendly adventure you’re searching for!
